Peter Bergson (1915-2001)
Born Hillel Kook in Lithuania, he moved with his family to Palestine when he was a child. Before he was twenty he had become an active member of the Irgun, a nationalist Jewish armed underground. In 1937, Bergson was sent to Poland where he engaged in organizing illegal immigration - in violation of British restrictions on Jewish immigration to Palestine. When World War II broke out, he went to the United States to promote the establishment of Jewish armed units within the allied armed forces to take part in the war effort against Nazi German.
In 1940, when information came through about the mass extermination of Jews in Europe, Bergson helped to establish the Committee for the Rescue of European Jewry. He worked tirelessly, using direct appeals to the American public, politicians and prominent Jewish figures to demand the rescue of Jews from the Nazi terror by any means.
