GableStage produces theatrical works of artistic excellence that explore today’s issues and ideas. GableStage serves South Florida’s culturally rich communities by creating bold, thought-provoking productions that inspire conversation and connection.
Originally founded as Florida Shakespeare Theatre by two female Coral Gables-based best friends, GableStage serves its multicultural South Florida community with unrivaled theatrical works of artistic excellence that confront today’s issues and ideas. In 1998, the theatre moved to its current home, the historic Biltmore Hotel, and became GableStage.
GableStage was selected and formally approved in 2011 by the Miami-Dade County Commission as the resident company for the historic Coconut Grove Playhouse, closed since 2006. Since 2015, GableStage has partnered with Florida International University (FIU) on the site’s redevelopment and future shared use.
In June of 2021, after the death of legendary producing artistic director Joseph Adler, the theatre company’s Board of Trustees started on a vibrant new chapter with the hiring of Bari Newport as producing artistic director. The company’s extensive community outreach, distinctive roster of educational offerings and ambitious mainstage programming have cemented GableStage’s reputation as a formidable leader in the field.
Since 2023 GableStage received eight Carbonell Awards (for a total of 72), including two coveted Outstanding Production awards. In 2023 and 2024 GableStage was voted Best Theatre Company by Miami New Times and Coral Gables Magazine. In 2025, GableStage was the Miami New Times “Reader’s Choice” Best Theatre Company.
Thanks to a visionary philanthropic gift made by Jessie Wolfson and The Wolfson Family, in the summer of 2025 GableStage’s current home was officially named as The Wolfson Family Theatre.
GableStage has produced more than 160 professional productions and welcomed over 600,000 patrons. The company continues to deepen partnerships with MDCPS, FIU’s Department of Theatre, and other cultural institutions. As GableStage prepares to move into its long-awaited new home at the historic Coconut Grove Playhouse in 2027/28, it is poised to expand its programming, audiences, and civic impact for the next generation.
GableStage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that relies on community support.
