GableStage Proudly Announces its 28th Season

The 2026/2027 Season features Broadway hits, acclaimed premieres, razor-sharp comedies, and powerhouse performances

GableStage, the venerable Coral Gables-based theatre company, proudly announces its 28th Season. The award-winning company’s ambitious season spans from September 2026 through June 2027, at the newly named Wolfson Family Theatre, located at the historic Biltmore Hotel.

Reporting live from Fresno, the 28th Season kicks off with the regional premiere of Weather Girl (September 25 – October 18, 2026). This blistering dark comedy by playwright, filmmaker and screenwriter Brian Watkins was named one of The New York Times’ Best Plays of 2025 and is under option by A24 and Netflix to be made into an upcoming limited series. Nicole Stodard, Producing Artistic Director of Fort Lauderdale’s Thinking Cap Theatre, directs this dizzying rampage into the warped soul of America.

Weather Girl is funny, fast-paced, quick-witted, smart, disturbing, surprising, and deeply moving. It is such great writing, and I cannot wait to bring it to GableStage,” says Stodard.

Just in time for Art Basel is a decadent, depraved, and wickedly funny new work by Jessica Provenz (Boca). Deception, champagne, and Michelangelos collide in the regional premiere of True Art (November 20 – December 20, 2026), directed by GableStage Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport.

True Art asks what makes a piece of art valuable or authentic, ” shared Provenz. “The play centers around a power struggle between two women — one a seasoned curator at the final chapter of her illustrious career, while the other is a wide-eyed intern just starting to climb the ladder in the dog-eat-dog art world.”

Next, celebrated playwright Joshua Harmon (Prayer for the French Republic, Bad Jews) pens a deeply funny and moving love letter to complicated families. We Had A World (January 22 – February 14, 2027) unravels thirty years of Harmon’s family history, with a little Rashomon-style assistance from his mother. Zoetic Stage’s Stuart Meltzer returns to GableStage to direct this regional premiere. *This play is made possible in part by The Jewish Philanthropy Initiative.

“Harmon’s writing is personal, relatable and takes on gigantic issues with humor and heart,” said Meltzer. “I’m honored to have been invited to direct Josh’s play We Had a World at his South Florida home of GableStage.”

The piece de résistance of the GableStage season is the Florida premiere of Liberation (March 19 – April 18, 2027). Fresh from its acclaimed Broadway run, this irreverent and intensely relevant tour-de-force by Bess Wohl won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Play. Directed by Bari Newport.

Liberation is a meditation on both the personal and political struggles of womanhood in America,” says Irina Kaplan (Prayer for the French Republic), who will star as part of a knock-out ensemble of eight. “I am over the moon to work on a play about the gains and losses of the feminist movement, with the remarkably feminist community of GableStage.”

To close the season, Miami’s own Teo Castellanos directs the regional premiere of littleboy/littleman (May 14 – June 13, 2027). This electrifying tale of brotherhood and belonging follows two Nicaraguan-born brothers whose competing visions of identity and the American Dream set them on a collision course with fate. Blending poetry, live music, and ritual, Rudi Goblen’s Miami-rooted work shatters through the fourth wall.

“Their brotherhood embodies the tension between escape and protection, assimilation and resistance, survival and dignity,” says Goblen. “The stage serves as a vessel where memory and performance merge, rhythm shapes the environment, and the brothers’ inner lives are fully expressed.”

“littleboy/littleman is ultimately about love, about family, about sibling rivalry, about two Latine men navigating the life of immigrants in America. This is a homegrown story, set in Miami, written by Miami playwright Rudi Goblen,” says Castellanos. “It is extremely powerful and really beautiful, and I cannot wait to direct it.”

“From a weather girl facing the apocalypse to a museum intern in over her head, a family at war with itself, a daughter uncovering the unfinished fight for women’s rights, and two Miami brothers chasing the American Dream, this season covers the full range of the human experience,” says Bari Newport.

“These are plays full of fight, humor, heartbreak, and belonging, and I could not be more proud to bring them to our stage,” Newport continues. “This season reflects GableStage’s commitment to bold storytelling and the belief that theatre can change how we see ourselves and one another.”

“GableStage never ceases to astonish me with the quality of the acting, directing, lighting and set design,” shared GableStage Board Chair, Roz Stuzin. “Each production is a jewel that our Producing Artistic Director, Bari Newport, has carefully polished so that we can enjoy the best regional theater in the country. It is a privilege to serve as the Chair of GableStage.”

GableStage’s 28th Season is made possible through major support from The Shubert Foundation, The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation, the Biltmore Hotel, the City of Coral Gables Cultural Arts Division, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and the Board of County Commissioners.
